Good practices and investments related to Cleaner Production

Example No. 5
BMS (Building Management System) - improvement of heating with ground source heat pumps, recuperation and cooling

Company:
MCD Electronics sp. z o.o. in Żywiec

Industry branch: electronic industry

Resources in question:

  • Thermal energy and cold
Pollution, waste in question:
  • Fossil fuels
Cost (implementation of good practice): High

Description of the problem:

The use of intelligent facility management system (e.g. buildings - BMS) is not only convenient, but also improves the heat and cooling management, helping to save energy. Combining it with renewable sources of energy (in this case: heat pumps) has also made it possible to withdraw boilers powered with fossil fuels.

Applied solution:

The company used its own BMS system. The system consists of the installation of sensors, actuators, valves and management modules, together with a configuration and visualization of the heating, recuperation and cooling systems. Each room was equipped with sensors monitoring temperature, flow, light intensity and motion detectors. The data is processed under planned scenarios implemented by the system by controlling the charging process of the accumulation tanks, switching on the cascades of heat pumps and controlling their operation. The system has also programmable modes: night, weekend, full shift, etc. The system integrates visualization of the vision, heating and cooling systems, recuperation flow speeds, lighting, removal of ice from the driveway to the warehouse, entrances (barrier), etc.

Obtained benefits and effects of the implementation:
  • Easy control and monitoring (including remote control)
  • Stabilization of temperatures in the monitored rooms, easy diagnostics through on-line parameter visualization
  • Reduction of heating and cooling costs.
  • Elimination of energy-consuming air conditioners (the cooling is also provided by heat pumps - additional energy savings)
  • Reduction of air emissions and elimination of fossil fuel consumption (boilers).
