Good practices and investments related to Cleaner Production

Example No. 17
Use of the by-product created when cutting gaskets for packaging, instead of polystyrene foam

Company:
WANAS Marek Waszkiewicz, Nisko near Rzeszów

Industry branch: manufacturing industry
Main products:
air handling units

Resources in question:

  • Materials
  • Secondary raw materials
Pollution, waste in question:
  • Waste
Cost (implementation of good practice): None
(cost-free measure)

Description of the problem:

Packaging is a complex process and needs a lot of effort as well as logistic expenditure to make sure the air handling unit reaches the customer without any scratches or damage. Initially, the process used polystyrene foam inserts and corners, which were specially purchased for this purpose. However, at the customer's site, they were certainly quickly becoming waste. Options for other types of protection were considered, including the use of by-products generated at Wanas.

Applied solution:

When analyzing the use of input materials, the Cleaner Production team observed that it is possible to use the by-product that is produced when cutting gaskets – for the packaging process, instead of polystyrene foam elements (reuse of by-products in the production area). Admittedly, polystyrene foam has not been eliminated 100%, but it has been largely replaced by elements made of gaskets that are a by-product of cutting.

Obtained benefits and effects of the implementation:
  • Reduction in the use of polystyrene foam in packages by 9,000 m.
  • Reduced amount of waste from 160 cm and 200 cm diameter gaskets (which are used for this purpose) by about 10,000 pcs/year
  • Savings from the implemented change: about PLN 15,000/year
