Good practices and investments related to Cleaner Production

Example No. 35
Replacement of lighting with LEDs in a manufacturing company

Company:
Nestor Springs Sp. z o.o. Sp. k.

Industry branch: Furniture industry
Main products: Spring units, pockets and springs used for mattresses and upholstered furniture

Resources in question:

  • Electrical energy
Pollution, waste in question:
  • Emissions into the atmosphere (indirectly)
  • Waste
Cost (implementation of good practice): Medium
(approx. PLN 30,500)

Description of the problem:

A large part of the Plant still had old lighting with low energy efficiency (18W fluorescent lamps – 4 in each fixture), which resulted in unnecessary electricity consumption and relatively frequent waste generation (burned-out fluorescent lamps).

Applied solution:

The project aimed to successively replace the lighting throughout the plant from the existing lighting to LEDs. It also included installing motion sensors where possible. The lighting in the utility and auxiliary rooms was replaced first (the extent of the changes is shown in the attached table), while in the next stage it is planned to replace the lighting in the production hall.

Obtained benefits and effects of the implementation:

  • Reducing electricity consumption from the light sources replaced under the project: 21,300.00 kWh/year (i.e., by about 1%)
  • Savings per year: about PLN 12,780
  • Elimination of waste containing mercury (used fluorescent lamps)
  • Less waste (assuming that the new light sources will have fewer failures and will not need to be replaced as often)
