Good practices and investments related to Cleaner Production

Example No. 29
Improving waste segregation at the design office

Company:
Sun Investment Development Pl Sp. z o.o. – Branch in Gliwice

Industry branch: RES (Renewable Energy Sources)
Main services: design of photovoltaic farms

Resources in question:

  • n/a
Pollution, waste in question:
  • Waste
Cost (implementation of good practice): None
(cost-free measure)

Description of the problem:

The company's office in Gliwice is located in premises leased by the company, so the segregation introduced is dependent on the building manager.
At the moment, waste is segregated into: plastic and metal (plastic caps are collected separately), paper, glass and mixed waste.

To check whether segregation is currently being carried out properly, a review and inventory of containers were conducted, during which the following errors and problems were noted:
  • Unlabeled containers in one room
  • Too few containers for mixed waste
  • Too many containers for glass waste (as water began to be purchased in returnable bottles)
  • No containers for plastics and metal in three rooms
  • No container for paper in one room
  • Too small container for mixed waste
  • Too small containers in the kitchen
  • Lack of ability to segregate biodegradable waste
  • Incorrect description of containers – instead of "plastics and metal" there was "plastics"
  • Problems with correct segregation of the following waste: paper towels, Styrofoam food containers, tetrapak or metal bottle caps
Applied solution:

In view of the above problems, the following changes were implemented after analysis:
  • Correct labeling of containers
  • Changing the arrangement of containers
  • Conducting an educational campaign among employees by distributing posters
Two more of the ideas will be considered for implementation after the company's planned relocation to new headquarters. These are:
  • Purchase of new containers for the kitchen
  • Checking the feasibility of introducing biodegradable waste segregation

Obtained benefits and effects of the implementation:

  • Better waste segregation – better availability of the right containers, less mistakes
  • Increased environmental awareness among employees
